Two years ago, I made a social media post about transitional home building being the next big thing in residential building and I was correct. I would say 65% of my home renovation projects and home additions are suites because other adults are living with family. It could be where aging loved ones can age in place, or because a newlywed couple are building a house, or perhaps a college age child is moving back and forth between dorms. The reason isn’t important. The investment is worth every penny. Because even if none these apply to your now, they could one day or turn additional living suite into a money-making investment.

For example, I have a neighbor who build a house with a live in walk out basement. They furnished it and set it up on AirBnB and Vrbo. I have watched them for a year offer this as a rental area. After a year they were able to add an additional rental space to their house with the profit and then rent out double the space.

Now for this to be profitable you would need to do investigating in your area of what is allowed and what the details may look like. But if you are creative and do the investigating additional living space can become a welcome living quarters for aging loved one’s whether they are transitioning to death or into launching as adults.
