Why I Don’t Use Used Materials as a Builder and Why it Protects You

As a builder and home renovator I do not use previously used material in my projects. There are many reasons why, one of which is it’s hard to warranty. Often times you can end up paying more in labor to fabricate something to fit in the space that it wasn’t previously meant to be. There are caveats like a solid wood door from your grand parents home. We will make exceptions but those will have caveats and are a case by case basis.

But like all rules this one came from a truly bizarre experience. This was years ago and wouldn’t be anyone you would know. A client had a flood and all her floors needed replacing. Her sister was a “designer’ from another state and took up her own home LVP and had it drop shipped to Tennessee. See photo below of how it arrived.

We literally had to get our skid steer from another project to get it off the trailer. We called the sister and client and expressed how we could not possibly install this. They decided to find their own installer. A guy who said he would not warranty the work.

To his credit he did install it. It did look good. But what took a week should have only took a couple days normally.

This is why we don’t do used most times.

So the next time at contractor tells you this have a little patience as we have extreme stories as to why we don’t do used material.
